Outline challenge ← All game modes

Guess the state by shape

No labels, no neighboring borders, just the outline. Choose from four state names by default, or switch to Type mode for the tougher version.

Mode rules
  • One state outline per round.
  • Six guesses before the answer is revealed.
  • Wrong guesses get regional hints.

How to Play the State Shape Quiz

The State Shape Quiz removes all context and leaves you with a single clue: the outline of a U.S. state. Without seeing its neighbors, its position on the map, or its size relative to other states, can you identify which state it is?

Game Rules

  • The Silhouette: A black outline of a randomly selected state will appear on your screen.
  • Six Guesses: You have 6 attempts to identify the state. Choice mode is fastest; Type mode accepts the full name or the 2-letter postal code.
  • Hints & Feedback: If you guess incorrectly, the game will reveal distance and directional hints to guide your next guess.

Strategies for Identifying State Outlines

Some states are incredibly easy to identify by shape: Texas, Florida, California, and Michigan (with its mitten shape) are instantly recognizable. However, the rectangular states in the West can be deceiving. Wyoming and Colorado are almost identical rectangles! To tell them apart, or to identify states like Kansas and North Dakota, you have to look for tiny irregularities in the borders—often caused by rivers like the Mississippi or the Missouri acting as natural boundaries.
