How to Play Guess the State

Guess the State is our classic map-based geography game. When the game starts, a random state will be highlighted in blue on the U.S. map. Your goal is to identify that state in six guesses or fewer, either by choosing from the answer buttons or by switching to Type mode.

Game Mechanics & Feedback

  • Six Attempts: You get a maximum of six tries to nail down the correct state.
  • Color Feedback: If you guess incorrectly, the state you typed will be highlighted in red on the map. This visual cue helps you narrow down regions through process of elimination.
  • Choice or Type: Choice mode keeps the round fast on phones and desktops. Type mode accepts full names (e.g., "Texas") or standard two-letter postal codes (e.g., "TX").

Tips for Identifying U.S. States

If you're stuck on a highlighted state, look at its surroundings. Is it landlocked or on a coast? Does it touch the Great Lakes or border Mexico or Canada? Paying attention to the states around it—as well as its general size and shape—can often trigger your memory. Use your early guesses to test regions if you're not sure!
