How to Play the State Path Challenge

The State Path Challenge tests your knowledge of how the United States fits together. You are given a starting state and a destination state. Your mission is to travel between them by only "stepping" on states that share a direct land border.

Game Mechanics & Par Score

  • Valid Moves: You can only jump to a state if it directly touches the state you are currently on.
  • Par Score: The game pre-calculates the absolute shortest route between the two states (the "Par" score). Your goal is to match that number of steps.
  • Undo & Reset: Don't worry if you take a wrong turn or get trapped in a corner. You can always undo your last move or reset the entire path and try a different route.

Strategies for Finding the Shortest Route

To minimize your steps, try to aim for large "bridge" states. States like Texas, Missouri, and Tennessee are fantastic for crossing long distances quickly because they border so many other states. Conversely, if you get pushed up into New England, you might be forced into taking many small, 1-to-1 steps to get out. Always visualize the general compass direction you need to travel before making your first move!
