How to Play the State Abbreviations Quiz

The State Abbreviations Quiz tests your knowledge of the official two-letter postal codes for all 50 U.S. states. You can choose between three different modes: Classic (Given a state, type the code), Reverse (Given a code, type the state), or Mixed.

Why Learn State Postal Codes?

Standardized two-letter postal abbreviations were introduced by the USPS in 1963 to make room for ZIP codes on address labels. Today, knowing these codes is essential for mailing, filling out forms, and understanding geographic data. While many are obvious (like NY for New York), others can be notoriously tricky.

The Tricky "M" States

  • There are 8 states that start with the letter M, making them the hardest abbreviations to memorize.
  • MI is Michigan, but MN is Minnesota.
  • MS is Mississippi, but MO is Missouri.
  • MA is Massachusetts, MD is Maryland, and ME is Maine.
  • And don't forget MT for Montana!

Other Common Pitfalls

Watch out for the "A" states too! AK is Alaska, AR is Arkansas, AL is Alabama, and AZ is Arizona. Try playing in "Mixed" mode to truly test if you have these codes committed to memory.
