How to Play Guess All 50 States

The Guess All 50 States challenge is the ultimate test of your U.S. geography memory. Your goal is simple but demanding: type out the names or postal abbreviations of all 50 U.S. states before you run out of ideas. The map will dynamically fill in as you correctly identify each state.

Game Rules & Mechanics

  • Start Whenever: The timer only begins ticking the moment you submit your first correct state.
  • Abbreviations Accepted: To speed things up, you can type the 2-letter postal codes (like "CA" or "NY") instead of the full state name.
  • Skip Around: There is no required order. Jump between the East Coast, the Midwest, or the West Coast as they pop into your head.
  • Give Up / Reveal: If you're completely stuck, you can press the "Give Up" button to reveal the states you missed.

Tips for Remembering All 50 States

If you're having trouble reaching the full 50, try breaking the map down geographically. Start with the corners: the Pacific states (Washington, Oregon, California) and the New England area. Then, mentally trace the borders of the country. Another popular strategy is the alphabetical approach—can you name all eight states that start with the letter "M"? (Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana).
